Why are the long-term mean values of each data set so similar and why don’t they match the values I get when I download these data directly from the various global modeling centers?

The hourly values of each long-term data set have been scaled to match the long-term mean of 3TIER’s Prospecting Tools dataset, which covers the globe at a resolution of 5km and from the time period from 1997 to 2006. 3TIER did this mean matching to focus the user’s attention on trends and variability in the data and not on simple biases, which would typically be removed when these data are used for long-term correction.

Note that since each of the reanalysis products extends beyond the time period of the Prospecting dataset, the long-term annual average values do not match exactly.
