Why did 3TIER change FirstLook?
In order to provide a more valuable experience to users, 3TIER has refined how wind and solar resource data is provided in FirstLook. This has come at the request of many users who found interpreting annual mean resource data difficult and were unsure how to connect that data to energy use and energy production. As a result, we have switched to a global percentile ranking system with worldwide coverage for all three renewables: wind, solar, and hydro. This immediately places the potential of a site in a relative and actionable context and allows users to compare locations for multiple renewable resources. We believe the majority of our users will find this approach more helpful and informative.

Since unveiling FirstLook, we’ve also had an outpouring of interest from users who want more information from these robust datasets, particularly with respect to how wind and solar resources vary throughout the year. They also asked for tools to more easily compare sites within the FirstLook interface. To better address these early-stage prospecting needs, we recently launched our Wind Prospecting Tools and Solar Prospecting Tools. As a subscriber, you’ll recognize these tools as an expansion of FirstLook’s award-winning design, however they offer more data and a greater level of utility. It’s all about providing more information and insight in a way that’s easier to manage, allowing users to make more informed wind and solar prospecting decisions.
