Unlimited Access to Wind Speed & Direction Data

Primary Uses

  • Efficient and easy resource prospecting
  • Setting customer expectations
  • Performing red flag analysis
  • Prioritizing leads and potential sites

The Wind Prospecting Tools save you time and improve your analysis so you have a more complete understanding of wind potential at your next site. They allow you to quickly explore wind resources worldwide without having to visit sites or collect observational data.

Unlimited Access

Featuring a user-friendly point and click interface, the Wind Prospecting Tools offer unlimited access to detailed resource information from our 5 km global wind dataset.

Seasonal Wind Variability

Obtain any site's annual mean and monthly mean wind speed values and view wind speed distribution with the click of your mouse. Understanding the seasonal variability will give you a more complete picture of how the wind resource will perform throughout the year and is essential in determining initial site suitability.

Wind Direction

The Wind Prospecting Tools include an annual mean wind rose to promote further understanding of your resource. Making early-stage decisions means knowing when the wind will blow and from what direction.

Easy Site Analysis and Comparison

3TIER’s highly customizable Dashboard interface makes analyzing and comparing sites, both side-by-side and at multiple hub heights, intuitive and simple. With a more robust set of information, prioritizing leads and potential sites has never been easier.

Access to 3TIER Dashboard tools

Tailor the way you see information to the specific needs and demands of your work all within a seamless, drag and drop interface featuring page layout options, maximize and scale tools, and multiple page views.

Click and Compare
  • Multiple Locations: The Wind Prospecting tools allow you to link and unlink the data displays for a single site while you evaluate it against other locations.
  • Wind Shear: Determine the ideal tower height for a given project by comparing wind data at multiple hub heights: 20 m, 50 m, and 80 m.
Unlimited Geographic Availability

Select the region you want to explore from the entire globe. With worldwide coverage, our global dataset has no constraints. If you want to develop there, we can provide you the tools to get started.

Delivery Method

Prospecting data tools are made available via a client-specific dashboard interface.

Methodology

The Wind Prospecting Tools are made possible by the most comprehensive and geographically complete wind dataset available. Founded on the latest science, the dataset was created through the application of advanced NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction) models and publicly available observations from meteorological towers worldwide. Using proven, state-of-the-art methods supported by a large scientific and research community, 3TIER has produced over a decade of simulations for wind resource data.

Technical Highlights
  • Spatial resolution of 2 arc minutes (approximately 5 km)
  • Validated by NCEP-ADP network data
  • Mesoscale 10-year WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model run
  • Model constrained by high-quality inputs from the NCAR/NCEP reanalysis, which incorporates real observational data.
  • Validation Results: The difference between annual mean wind speed data provided by the Wind Prospecting tools and actual on-site measurements from NCAR/NCEP reanalysis is less than 0.5 m/s at 50% of the observational stations and less than 1 m/s at 78% of the stations. The overall bias is +0.05 m/s relative to NCEP-ADP observations, and the RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) is 0.93 m/s.
