Day and Week Ahead Wind Forecasting

Primary Uses

  • Daily operational and maintenance planning
  • Making informed decisions about reserve energy sources
  • Reducing the occurrence and length of curtailments
  • Energy trading and marketing
  • Construction phase decision-making

Capitalize on your investment and meet the revenue and capacity goals set up by your preliminary assessments. Basic Wind Forecasting provides vital information for maximizing your wind project's energy production and revenue, particularly for satisfying power purchase agreements (PPAs), and in scheduling routine maintenance and turbine downtimes. With this forecast you have all the essentials for efficiently planning maintenance and pre-scheduling energy.

Basic Wind Forecasting Dashboard

ACCURACY

To provide the most accurate day and week-ahead predictions possible, 3TIER integrates highly customized numerical weather prediction models with thousands of real-time surface observations. To further improve accuracy, 3TIER can apply advanced model output statistics (or MOS) to our atmospheric models using available historical met tower or power production data. This process significantly reduces overall forecast error and corrects forecast biases while preserving wind power ramp predictions.

USABILITY

Forecast information is delivered through a customizable dashboard interface, which includes easily interpreted graphics of wind production and other environmental conditions. Downloadable power and weather forecast data files offer easy integration with your own internal software and scheduling systems and can even be delivered through our API.

To ensure that your forecast is always based on the most accurate information available, 3TIER also offers an Outage Scheduler. This simple, web-based tool enables the user to impact the accuracy of the forecast by scheduling known turbine outages directly in the interface.

Technical Overview

  • A Rewind Tool allows the user to see how forecasts are evolving over time by comparing the current forecast with previous predictions.
  • A Seasonal Wind Power Forecast can be added to your wind forecast, which projects 12 months into the future and is based on 40 years of site-specific climatology and climate index forecasts.
  • An Aggregator Tool allows you to view an aggregate forecast of all your wind projects and perform scenario analysis by clicking specific projects and sub-regions 'on or off.'
  • An API is also available for faster integration of downloadable forecast data into your internal analysis tools and programming software.

Product Highlights

  • Customizable dashboard interface
  • Guaranteed 24/7 availability
  • Forecasts for your location update four times per day, cover the next operating day, and extend 168 hours into the future (1 full week).
  • Security. Easily set your own permissions system for access to forecast information with usernames and passwords for every forecast tool. In addition, 3TIER provides a secure password protected web host server for all data transfers.

Delivery Method

Forecasting tools are delivered via a client-specific dashboard interface and accompanied by data files available in multiple formats (CSV, XML, XLS).

Methodology

Aligned with 3TIER's belief in using proven, state-of-the-art modeling technologies to solve forecasting problems, our high-resolution forecast system is a combination of advanced statistical algorithms, highly customized mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, and publicly available weather forecasts, including data from the US National Weather Service as well as other global weather forecast centers. Our model also incorporates the climatology and terrain for your project location using diurnal variability averages on a monthly time-scale and thousands of surface weather stations.

Customer Requirements

In order to provide wind forecasting, 3TIER must be supplied with all the meta data for your project such as: time zone, project location, hub height, turbine model, naming conventions, and other identifiers for met towers and turbines.
