SEATTLE, Wash.— 3TIER Environmental Forecast Group Inc. recently participated in an international wind energy forecasting symposium in Norrköpings, Sweden. Selected as one of three U.S. representatives to attend the International Energy Agency Wind Forecasting Techniques Symposium, 3TIER presented an overview of their forecasting operations in the United States. 3TIER currently provides wind energy forecasts for several wind projects throughout the country, including the 300MW Stateline Project, currently the nation’s largest.

“It was a tremendous opportunity for information exchange between the world leaders in wind energy forecasting,” said Ken Westrick, 3TIER’s CEO, “It was interesting to see how unique forecast challenges are being dealt with throughout the world, often using very similar approaches but with different techniques. It was apparent from the European representatives that have large wind generation assets that the importance of accurate wind forecasts increases significantly as the energy mix shifts increasingly to wind. Accurate forecasts are essential to insure energy reliability”.

Participants from 13 countries took part in the workshop, which was hosted by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, and sponsored by the Paris-based International Energy Agency, an autonomous agency linked with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
